"Original Medicare" is not as good as Medicaid. Income limits for Medicaid when you are under 65 are higher than after 65 when you have Medicare. Medicare requires you to pay 20% of your medical bills - with no cap. And drug costs for people on Medicare can be outrageous. That's the stupid, disfunctional for-profit system Americans have settled for.
Agreed, Medicare is an insurance industry bad joke. The insurance industry is fleecing not only its policy holders, but the entire US taxpaying public that funds Medicare. Everyone should have a single, comprehensive, Medicaid-like health care plan. Those who want more, can pay for the fancy eyeglasses or elective surgeries or anything else that Medicaid may not cover. We'd all pay a lot less and get a lot more, by eliminating all the insurance industry-related costs, including all the unnecessary and borderline fraudulent advertising. Health care is a human right, not a financial product sold by insurance companies.
